History Of Chocolate
2000 BC - The Egyptians are squeezing the sap from the mallow plant which grows in marshes
and mixing it with honey and nuts creating the first marshmallow.
600 - The Mayans are already cultivating chocolate in Central America.
1502 - On his fourth voyage Christopher Columbus comes into contact with cocoa as a beverage
and the beans used as money on the Island of Guanaja.
1525 - Hernando Cortes after tasting Montezuma's favorite drink  Xocoti (chocolate) sends a batch
of cocoa beans back to Spain for the Emperor Charles V. After mixing it with sugar and vanilla the
drink becomes a favorite of the Spanish nobility.
1559 - The Duke Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy imported the use of chocolate to the Court of Carlo
V of Spain, where he served as General
1606 - Antonio Carletti introduces chocolate to Italy.
1615 - Louis Xlll of France marries Anne Of Austria and in the process the French court is
introduced to chocolate.
1657 - Historians believe a Frenchman opens the first chocolate house in London.
1674 - Chocolate is sold as a solid for the first time as pastilles and as "Spanish Style Pudding".
1732 - French industrial concern Dubuisson starts selling a raised table heated with charcoal
which allows cocoa beans to be ground up easier.
1734 - Naturalist Linnaeus classified the seeds of cacao as "Theobroma, or "Food of the Gods
1736 - Hydraulic power is added by Dubuisson to speed up the process.
1765 - Dr. James Baker and John Hannon open the first chocolate mill in America in Dorchester
Massachusetts.
1767 - Bayldon and Berry begin selling candied fruit peel in York, England. Joseph Terry becomes
a partner soon the firm becomes Terry's of York
1769 - Lollipops are introduced in England.
1780 - Dr. James Baker and John Hannon introduce Bakers Chocolate.
1806 - During a Napoleonic War blockade of Turin local chocolate makers start using hazelnuts to
stretch out their  cocoa supplies leading to the creation of many of the hazelnut pralines enjoyed
today.
1819 - François-Louis Cailler opens the first chocolate factory in Switzerland in Corsier near
Vevey.
1825 - Antoine Brutus Menier builds the first mechanized modern chocolate factory at
Noisel-sur-Marne allowing for the mass production of chocolate.
Philippe Suchard opens a confectionery shop in Neuchâtel Switzerland.
1826 - Philippe Suchard opens a chocolate factory in Serrières Switzerland.
Jacques Foulquier opens a chocolate factory in Geneva Switzerland.
Caffarel starts up in Turin Italy.
1828 - Dutch inventor Hendrik Van Houten patented the Van Houten cocoa press
1830 - Charles-Amédée Kohler opens a chocolate factory in Lausanne Switzerland.
1836 - Stratta opens in Turin Italy.
1839 - Franz Stollwerck starts his company manufacturing cough drops. For an excellent history

1842 - Barry Group founded in the United Kingdom by Charles Barry.
1845 - Rudolf Sprüngli opens his factory in Zurich Switzerland.
1849 - The first chocolate bars appear in England under the name "edible chocolate bar".
1850 - Callebaut founded in Belgium as a brewery and dairy operation. For a brief history of
Callebaut.
1851 - Sprengel chocolates founded in Germany.
1852 - Aquilino Maestrani opens a factory in Lucerne Switzerland.
1857 - Jean Neuhaus arrives in Brussels from Switzerland and opens up his shop producing bitter
chocolates for        medicinal purposes.

Milton Hershey was born in Pennsylvania.
1863 - Gerardus Johannes Droste opens his chocolate firm in Haarlem , Netherlands. He starts
selling his chocolate pastilles 'Pastilles Droste'.
1865 - Caffarel introduces Gianduja at Carnival in Turin.
Reber opens for business in Bad Reichenhall Germany.
1867 - Daniel Peter opens his factory in Vevey Switzerland.
Caffarel names Gianduja after introducing it two years earlier.
1868 - Etienne Guittard returns to San Francisco from France and opens Guittard Chocolate on
Sansome Street
1872 - Chocovic originated in the Spanish city of Vic as Chocolates Arumi
1874 - Johann Georg Munz opens a factory in Flawil Switzerland.
1875 - Daniel Peter operating out of his factory in Vevey Switzerland finally masters mixing milk
and chocolate and invents milk chocolate.
Platti opens its doors in Turin Italy.
1876 - After Franz Stollwerck's death his five sons found Stollwerck Brothers and continue
marketing the family name.
Milton Hershey opens his first confectionary business in Philadelphia. It fails after 6 years.
1878 - Palmer Candy opens up. They are still in business making the King Bing Bar.
Silvano Venchi opens his confectionery laboratory in Turin Italy.
1879 - Rodolphe Lindt opens his factory in Berne and invents conching.
1880 - Gertosio Pastry opens up for business in Turin Italy.
1881 - Valor Chocolates formed in Spain by Don Valeriano López Lloret.
HJ Packer starts his chocolate company in Bristol, England. The company is still in existence today
and produces            products such as Famous Names Chocolate Liqueurs and Elizabeth Shaw
Mint Crisps.
1883 - Cote d'Or is started in Belgium.
1884 - Félix Bonnat opens his shop in Voiron, France
1886 - Auguste Fauchon founds his shop in Paris. An excellent history of the Fauchon firm.
Milton Hershey opens the Lancaster Caramel Company his first successful confectionery
venture.
1890 - August 02, the first factory of the firm G.J. Droste opens.
Don Vicente López Soler takes over Valor Chocolates.
Joseph Emile Hachez moves to Germany from Belgium and starts The Hachez Chocolate Co.
1891 - Droste factory moves to Noorder Buiten Spaarne , Netherlands.
1893 - Milton Hershey visits the Columbian Exposition in Chicago and is impressed with a
German companies                          chocolate making exhibit. He purchases their equipment and
has it shipped to his Lancaster Caramel factory and            procedes to enter the chocolate
business.
1895 - Auguste Fauchon sets up, in the former post office in the Place de la Madeleine, Paris his
confectioner's shop.
April 17, Herhsey records its first sale of chocolate outside of the Lancaster Caramel Company.
Before that all of             the chocolate that they had produced had been used to mix with the
caramels.
1897 - March 01, Gerardus Johannes Droste turns over management of the Droste Company to
his sons.
1898 - Droste allowed to use the coat of arms of the Queen - Widow Emma.
1899 - Jean Tobler opens a factory in Berne Switzerland.
