In Sophie and Michael Coe start at the beginning and have produced a scholarly look
at the complete history of chocolate. It's all here from the earliest mentions of chocolate, to its use in Mayan culture.
Its introduction to 16 th century Europe. It's inevitable refinement which by the nineteenth century led to its
consumption in solid form not just as a beverage.
As the nineteenth century developed production techniques were refined further. Soon mass production led to a
lowering of costs which led to mass consumption. Chocolate was no longer the province of the well off all could enjoy
it ans they did.
The twentieth century came and everyone got a chance at eating chocolate. Companies such as Hershey and
Cadbury churned out massive quantities and the world was never the same. The Coes present each step in
chocolate's development in an eminently readable manner.
